google docs images

Hi Ernie,

I was wondering about importing flashcards with images from Google Docs. Is there any way to link images from Dropbox to use in cards imported from Google Docs? Please let me know if this would work, or if there's any other way!

Hey David. Yes, you can do that. Create a "Picture 1" or "Picture 2" column (for example) in Google Docs and put the picture name there. Put your pictures in a PUBLIC dropbox folder. To get the download to look for dropbox directory, get the dropbox URL for the directory path and add the following header
* {new column} media-dir {new column} http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1231234/Chinese/

See this page for more info:

Let me know if you more guidance.

Yes I seem to have a bit of a problem. I placed my photos several folders within the Public folder in Dropbox. I then uploaded an xlsx to Google Docs, and converted the SAME file to txt for Dropbox. I then imported two decks of the same cards, one from Dropbox and the other from Google Docs, with the same "Media Dir" address for both.

Interestingly, the dropbox deck works perfectly, but the Google Docs deck doesn't have pictures. Any ideas of why this may be? I appreciate your help!

I'm not sure. I just tried a test with google docs using the media-dir header and it worked fine. If you have any double-quotes in your data, then that might cause a problem because of an issue google docs right now. Other than that, I can't see why the two would work differently. If you want, you can email or share a spreadhsheet and I can try it myself and see what's going on.

I uploaded your xlsx file to Google docs, but I didn't see any media-dir header in cells A1, B1, C1
I'd expect something like below on the first line.

Code: Select all
*   media-dir   http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1231234/SomeDir/
Text 1   Picture 1   Text 2   Category 1
1   thoracicorgans1.jpg   cricothyroid muscle   Thorax Organs

I'm going to bed now, so I'll respond in the morning if it's still not working.
