Filter cards to learn "homework" vocabulary

Hello again,
I'm terribly sorry to be back so soon, but I can't find anything about my issue in the forum. My apologies if I'm doubling an entry.

A kid I want to help is studying Spanish. There is a vocabulary section in the back of the book, and the teacher has them learn this section in daily chunks. I am looking for a way to have her concentrate on the current day's words/vocabulary. She will of course also need to work with a "normal" spaced repetition option to retain all the "old" words, but it would be nice to be able to quickly study for a potential quiz the next day.

I've figured out that I can set Categories, e.g. "unit 1", "unit 2", and so on, and filter based on that. But I also need the daily subset. I'll enter the entire vocabulary section before the start of the school year, I don't want to have to enter only the daily subset every day. I think I'd go nuts.

Any suggestions?
Best regards, Matina

Hi Matina,

Each category section can have at most about 200 category values. It sounds like you set "Category 1" to values like "unit 1" and "unit 2".

How about using "Category 2" column for your daily date? Either a date like "2021-08-23" or a counter like "Day 1", "Day 2".

You can then filter on a single "Category 2" value and change study mode to "short term goal" (with repeat missed turned on) for focus on a subset of data. Spaced repetition is good for long-term retention/learning, but maybe not to focus on a quiz coming up. You can also create "combination deck", with the original deck set to spaced repetition and the combination deck set to short term goal, so you can easily which between the two modes.

You seemed to already be familiar with categories and filtering, so I'm not sure if my suggestion of using "Category 2" solves your problem.

Hi Ernie,

Thanks for your quick reply! Sounds very much like an extra column like I had planned won't do the trick... I'll go with category 2 as you suggest. I think I'll put a single value for category 2, something like "study today". Then she can put all those words to that category value that she has set as her homework on a daily basis. Bear with me as I play around with that idea 😁. I'm new to the app but I am sure there's enough help around for the settings to work as I need them. Thanks again for your speedy response!

Best regards, Matina

Hi Ernie,

just wanted to provide a quick feedback. I've worked out a solution for everything I need and it's working beautifully! Thank you so much for this brilliant app!

If you'd like, I'd be happy to write it up for your help file, including how to change the category (category 2 with two values, "homework" and "studied") on a daily basis. I'll wait first for some real life testing by my "client" 😄.

Best regards, Matina
