No, categories apply to a card, not to a side.
There are 4 different category groups.
For example, "Category 1" might be used for "chapter number" and "Category 2" used for "part of speech"
I don't know if it would work for you, but maybe you can use Category 1 for "side 1 category", etc.
In Deck Options > Cards to Study, you can filter on specific values of Category 1 and Category 2 (using "and" or "or" logic).
You could potentially change which side is shown first depending on your category values, if this pertains to you.
