How do you format text that you don't want spoken aloud?

How do you format text that you don't want spoken aloud?

Postby waltex » Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:50 pm

Is there any way one can format text that you want to be seen on the screen (but not spoken aloud)?

I know there is a way, but I forgot how to do it.

Thank you for this awesome program Ernie!

Hi. Sorry for the slow response.

Go to Deck Options > Sound > TTS. Tap the gear icon at top-right for TTS Options.

The 2nd option is "Ignore Text in ( )". If you turn this on, text in parenthesis won't be included in TTS.
The 1st option is related and another way to do it. You can put the text you WANT spoken in brackets and turn this option on.

Keep in mind that if you download iSpeech mp3 files and you want them re-created, you can turn the option "re-download sounds" in the TTS Options screen and then "Download Sound" to recreate all sounds. You can also update individual sounds in the card edit/detail screen by first deleting existing sound then tapping the "Download TTS" in that screen.

If this doesn't solve your problem, let me know.

Thanks!

hi Ernie, hi everybody

I create a deck of japanese sentences from a (japanese) movie, which include kanji, hiragana and katakana.

What I have is:
1. A sentence using all three japanese alphabets (kanji, hiragana and katakana.)
2.The same sentence using all three japanese alphabets BUT after each kanji there is additionally a right pronounciation in hiragana in square brackets.
3.English translation
4.for each sentence an audio clip as mp3 file from original movie.

for example:
1. (カンタ) 早くしないと遅れるよ
2. (カンタ) 早[はや]くしないと 遅[おく]れるよ
3. Kanta, hurry up! You'll be late!

On the first side of the cards I set
1. A sentence using all three japanese alphabets
and
4. mp3 file

On the second side I set
2.The same sentence using all three japanese alphabets BUT after each kanji there is additionally a right pronounciation in hiragana in square brackets.
3.English translation

If I use TTS for 2. on the second side, both kanji and its pronounciation in square brackets are beeing read.

The option for me would be to ignore [...] but I understand it is only possible to ignore Text in (..) ??
Is it so?
Any other possibilitty? I do not realy undestand "re-create" -if it would do?

Would it be possible to TTS read 1. on the second side of the card (BUT on the first side 1. still should stay linked to the mp3 file)
??

Another idea is to remove all ( ) brackets -they are for proper names- in Excel and then chage alle [ ] to ( )
Then "Ignore Text in ( )" should work.

Hope you undersand what I mean..

Any commentsor advice?
Best Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

In the TTS settings screen, one option is "Alternative TTS Text", where you can put the TTS text to speak in { }. So you'd do something like:
早[はや]くしないと 遅[おく]れるよ{早くしないと遅れるよ}

But, do you already have the clean text in another Text item? For example:

Text 1: 早くしないと遅れるよ
Text 2: 早[はや]くしないと 遅[おく]れるよ

If you want TTS spoken on side 2 (with Text 2 showing), you'd normally set Voice 2 (to go along with Text 2).
But instead, how about the following...
Set TTS for "Voice 1"
You can use "Card Layout" in Deck Options (use "Custom 1" and edit it), to include "Sound 1" on Side 2 (along with Text 1). Does that make sense?
You have an mp3 file, so you can't have mp3 in Sound 1 column ,and also using TTS Voice 1 (they will fight). But you can put mp3 sound in say "Sound 2" or "Sound 4" (whatever) and again use "Card Layout" to combine parts and needed. Hopefully something like that would work.

Ernie,
I changed the column in Excel from sound 1 to sound 2 and uploded the deck.

used your idea:
"..Set TTS for "Voice 1"
You can use "Card Layout" in Deck Options (use "Custom 1" and edit it), to include "Sound 1" on Side 2 (along with Text 1). Does that make sense?.:"

so now I have TTS for Voice 1 on the second side (reading correctly side 1)
and mp3 (from Sound 2 column) on side 1.

exactly as I wanted to have.
Perfect!!

Ernie, I have to say it once again:
your flashcards are the best!!!
and your support is the best!!

Regards from Germany
