Changing voice in TTS - SOLVED

Changing voice in TTS - SOLVED

Postby lunarita » Fri Mar 21, 2025 4:03 am

Hi all

Edited to add - this is now solved although I'm not sure how. I've also just discovered the autoplay slideshow feature which is VERY useful for just practising sounds.

This is a relatively trivial issue, but I'm trying to change the voice in my TTS. I have English on one side and Vietnamese on the other.
For English, I currently have an Amazon polly voice selected because the Android voices wouldn't download. Now i've got them downloaded I'm trying to switch but whatever I do (even if I temporarily switch to "None") the original voice choice is still playing.

I've tried closing and re-opening the app. What else can I try?

It's odd, because I've just successfully managed to switch the other side voice - a vietnamese one, because a southern accent voice is now available. Yet the english one will not change.

Any suggestions welcome.

PS - of course, a massive thanks for the app and for everything you do - it's by far the best flashcards app I've found!

Hi,

Thanks! I'm glad you like the app.

First off, Amazon Polly voices are mp3 files that download and saved with the card. These are created when you tap "Download Sounds". After this point, changing the language or voice doesn't do anything because the mp3 files already exist. Even if you select a Google voice, the mp3 files will have priority. BUT, in the TTS settings screen, there is a button that will delete all your TTS Amazon mp3 files. Do this if you want to change these sounds.

As for being unable to download the Google sounds, you can try in Google settings:
Settings > System > Languages > Text-to-speech output > Preferred engine should be Google, and tap gear icon at right of Preferred engine > Install Voice Data....
For me, it didn't work in the past with in was in Airplane mode, so try turning that off if you have it on.

Android voices are not downloaded. They are spoken "on the fly". There are no mp3 files created. With no mp3 files, changes to Android voices will take effect immediately.
