iOS dictation vs voice control

iOS dictation vs voice control

Postby Xaxuux » Thu Jun 11, 2026 5:21 am

I am long time user of this application. With iOS voice control I have a hands-free set up when the answer is in English and I’m using the spelling mode. I just speak my answer, it gets typed, I yell “new line” and my answer is checked.

This is all good when the answer is in English. Recently, I started studying Dutch. There is no voice control language pack for Dutch. At the same time there’s possibility to do dictation in Dutch. I speak my answer it gets typed but when I say “new line”, my answer is not checked, just a new line character is inserted.

By any chance, do you know what’s the difference between saying “new line” in dictation mode and voice control? What’s the actual trigger for the spelling to be checked in the application? Would it be possible to put that trigger into the configuration and use a different key like an @sign? I can dictate an @.

Hi,

The trigger to check spelling is a newline, or the keyboard enter key, but it seems that a newline in dictation is not triggering the event that I'm looking at.

I might be able to program a workaround.

But let me ask you, say you say "new line" and it checks wrong/correct, and goes to the next card. Do you need the dictation to still be active? The app won't work that way currently because two different input fields for different cards. If you don't might the dictation stopping, I guess you can use voice control to get back into editing?

I got "new line" to work, but I have some side effects that I'd need to iron out / figure out, before I could be used correctly.

What I currently could do is to go Dutch dictation, speak my answer, press Enter on the keyboard, answer checked, goes to next card on success (I need another enter key press on fail), stays in dictation. My use case is a bit special, I do the cards while driving. I do not recommend to anyone doing that though!! It works for me, but it might very well not work for others!

So ideally it would be nice if it stayed like that, but my phone is on a holder, I just tap occasionally, so what’s available currently is already pretty nice.

After playing around with it some more, I not able to get this to work. Too many side effects.

If I enable dictation, I need to physically tap the keyboard "Done" button instead of saying "new line", and it will answer, and if correct, move to the next card and dictation stays enabled. Not bad perhaps. This is how it was working before and now.

So I won't be making any updates related to this. I tried, but can't get it to work well.
