From my experience, I think parenthesis should work just fine as far a smoothness goes. My answer is... try it out and if you notice a problem then try something else. I really don't have any other specific recommendations.

Will certain characters such as parentheses cause problems when producing the m4a files?

For example, if I have an entry like this:
(表示瞭解或發現某事物的喜悅)啊哈

Would it be better to change it to:
表示瞭解或發現某事物的喜悅,啊哈

Also I'm using the unicode versions of these characters, for example:
( as opposed to (

When say problems, I'm referring to:
the smoothness of the generated speech, etc.
